Tourmaline is a crystalline boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. The name comes from the Sinhalese word "Turmali" or "Thoramalli" meaning “Stone attracting ash” referring to its pyro-electric properties. The Dutch, who were the first to bring the tourmaline to Europe, were familiar with this effect a long time before it was able to be provided with a scientific explanation. They used a heated tourmaline to draw up the ash from their meerschaum pipes, and called the gemstone with the amazing powers an 'aschentrekker'.
Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and the gemstone comes in a wide variety of colors. They are often called” the color of the rainbow” gem. They vary from yellow, red, green, blue and black and many shades in between. Sometimes found in different colors within the same structure. Native Americans have used pink and green tourmaline as funeral gifts for centuries.
Smoky quartz is a grey to brown, translucent variety of quartz. It ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to a brownish-gray crystal that is almost opaque. A very dark brown to black opaque variety is called morion. The smoky color is a result of free silicon formed by the silicon dioxide released during natural irradiation. Another variety is Cairngorm, found in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland and is usually yellowish brown in color although some specimens are grey-brown. Some of the earliest uses of smoky quartz was by the Romans and Sumerians which used smoky quartz to make intaglio rings for sealing letters with wax. They however opted to a softer material of carnelian which naturally resists the wax and because Quartz is hard to carve. The Chinese made sunglasses in the 12th century from thin slices of the material. Smoky quartz is a rather prevalent mineral that is mostly mined in Colorado, USA, in Brazil, Australia, Madagascar, Switzerland, and Scotland where it is considered to be a national gemstone. This beautiful crystal was considered sacred by the Druids.
Smoky Quartz is an extremely protective stone. It is regarded as a grounding stone providing physical and psychic protection from negative energies. It can transform negativity of any kind into positive energy. It is a useful stone when dealing with stressful or difficult situations or people, such in a professional workplace. It focuses on success and the realizations of personal goals and dreams. It is believed to ward off depression and reduce stress.
